There are many things to keep in mind when approaching the patient with learning to swallow pills.

• There are many different techniques; success is the goal and is extremely likely!
• Reassure the patient:
• Success is likely
• There are many different ways to achieve success
• Give lots of encouragement and praise
• Stay calm and be patient
• A positive attitude will help
• Training sessions should be short, but do not rush the process
• Pick a setting that is free of distraction
• Give instructions that are appropriate. For children, take into consideration their age. For adults, don't talk down to them.
• End each session with a success -- even if it means going back to a lower level of accomplishment
